Cruisin' in the rain
Lions Club's annual car show attracts 40 cars despite storm

".............So does Ricky Riddle in his ultra-patriotic Ford F-250 customized truck. The Kansas City, Mo., man
worked with the custom airbrush artist known as Pepper to cloak the 2007 black model in vintage Americana
symbols, from a chrome eagle on the grill to a Statue of Liberty on the rear driver's side panel near the tailgate.

“Truckers always blow their horns in appreciation when I pass them on the highway, and I had a guy on a motorcycle pull up alongside and give me the
thumbs up,” said Riddle, who plans to display the truck at as many events as possible to show his support for U.S. troops.

The paint job, which took three weeks to complete, also includes an American flag, the twin towers and other recognizable symbols of freedom. American
and POW/MIA flags fluttered in stands attached to the top of the cab on Sunday afternoon as Riddle, a U.S. Army veteran, showed onlookers the inside of
the cab, complete with a voice-activated stereo and PlayStation 2.

“I wanted to do something for the Armed Forces, to show my patriotism,” said Riddle, who has invested more than $100,000 in the vehicle. “I just wanted to
show my support for the troops, and the firefighters and police officers.”

Riddle recently won a couple of awards at a car show in Emporia, Kan., and he has been invited back to drive his patriotic truck in that community's Fourth
of July parade. He also has been asked to display his pickup, which sports the personalized Missouri plate T-Eagle, at the Kansas City, Mo., firefighters'
annual picnic.

“My dad served 20 years in the Air Force, and when I decided to do this I'm sure he was smiling down at me,” Riddle said of his late father, Bobbie Riddle.

Sporting a ball cap, T-shirt and cutoff jeans, Riddle smoked a cigarette and joked with his friend, Woody Campbell, a fellow Road Warriors car club member
who was displaying a 1957 Bel Air next to the truck. Riddle, 51, credited Campbell with coaxing him into customizing the F-250. That's when Riddle decided
to give it a patriotic theme.

And he's not done. Riddle said he plans to have additional detail work done to the vehicle, including a rendition of Arlington Cemetery.

“I've never had a hobby before.” Riddle tugged down the bill of his cap against the rain. He surveyed his truck and smiled. “Now I've got one.”
